The Berkshires
are home to year-round exhibitions and
festivals. Summer is of course an ideal time
to visit, due to a large number of festivals
and celebrations of historical sites. In
fact, the month of July has been declared
Berkshire County Heritage Month by the
County Commissioners of Berkshire County.
Of course, if you are looking to explore
more intimate sites, such as historic homes,
quieter times of year often make the most
sense. A great site to visit is the home of
Colonel John Ashley, the oldest complete
house in the Berkshires. The home of the
famous poet (and one of the original
founders of the Republican Party) William
Cullen Bryant is also open for viewing and
tours. Lenox is filled with such sites, as
it was the longtime home of many of the
landmark families of industry, art and
finance in the 19th century, as well as the
literary elite. Esteemed Gilded Age author
Edith Wharton, in fact, lived right next
door. Hampton Terrace Bed and
