If you have ever lingered over such
timeless novels such as Edith Wharton's
The Age of Innocence and imagined the
lives of the characters living in the Gilded
Age, or even the lives of the authors who
created such beautiful work; you will enjoy
an escape to Hampton Terrace Bed and
Breakfast in Lenox, Massachusetts, located
in the legendary Berkshire Hills. Berkshire
Hills was the home of such literary giants
as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Mark Twain,
Edith Wharton, and Henry James. It is
unsurprising that the Berkshires quickly
became a cultural haven, as well, as many of
the aristocratic families of the late 19th
century began escaping to Lenox for
glamorous retreats from hectic city life.
At Hampton Terrace Bed and Breakfast, we
offer the experience of living this romance.
The setting of many Gilded Age novels, Lenox
offers a rare chance to experience a
treasured part of this country's rich
history. Literary luminaries and the
families of early American "royalty" alike
built summer homes in Lenox, Massachusetts,
that have since become legends. Many of
these homes have been converted to museums
or venues for music and theater. But
historic Hampton Terrace, long owned by the
Struthers family of Lenox, became a
luxurious bed and breakfast. The Main
House, built in 1897, offers five completely
renovated guest rooms. We offer new
millennium luxury to complement the
decadence and the romance of the Gilded Age.
Each room is decorated with antiques, and is
equipped with a TV/VCR, a private bath, and
more. To complete the experience, each room
offers a warm and romantic fireplace, and
either a Jacuzzi or a claw-foot tub. The
Carriage House, built in 1897 and updated in
2001, is every bit as luxurious, with six
King or Queen rooms. Each splendid room has
a private bath, an in-room TV/VCR, an
oversized Jacuzzi tub, a fireplace, and
vintage furniture. We also have a new
heated, grotto-style pool, by which are
constructed our new King Suites. The King
Suites are truly decadent: each one features
a private entrance, a sitting porch, a
living room area with a fold-out couch, a
fireplace, a two-person 7' x 7' corner
Jacuzzi, a wet bar, a fridge, a four-poster
canopy king bed, a TV with a DVD player, and
a luxurious private bath. Many of the
aristocratic families of 19th-century
America, such as the Morgans, Astors,
Vanderbilts, Westinghouses, and Carnegies,
craved a retreat from the stress and busy
life of the city--for many of the same
reasons we do today. They built summer homes
in Lenox, Massachusetts, after hearing of
the beauty and culture in the Berkshires.
Hampton Terrace, one of the original Lenox
homes built specifically for luxury and
relaxation, is still a relaxing retreat, and
now it is a luxurious bed and breakfast, as
well.
