Why it's called the Rosalyn Elkan Suite

inns-in-lenox-ma--king-suite-cottages--rosalyn-elkan-smallportraitKing Suites are named after Inkeepers Susan and Stan’s grandmothers. The 1929 Steinway in the living room of the main house has great significance. It was a wedding present from Stan's great-grandfather, Eli Elkan, to his new daughter-in-law in 1929. Rosalyn, an opera major at Indiana State, moved to Macon, GA, and during her three quarters of a century there, she was the unquestioned Grand Dame of classical music in Macon.

Founder of the Macon Concert Association and a co-founder of the Macon Symphony, she also was on the National Council of the Metropolitan Opera and knew all of the major classical music names of the day, many of whom would stay at, or be entertained in her home while traveling through the South.

She and her husband, Stanley, traveled extensively throughout the world from the 1930s through the 1970s, with many of those trips lasting months. Rosalyn lived until her mid-90s.

“I want to take the time to let you know what a nice and relaxing time Irene and I had during our stay at Hampton Terrace last weekend. Your recommendations for dining and the Clark Art Institute were exactly what we wanted to do during our time in Lenox. You are a very gracious host and Atticus was a nice touch to the ambiance of the inn...........Thanks from me also, Stan. We had a great weekend and did not care what the weather brought. Your home is very warm and inviting and you are a most gracious host. We have already recommended your bed and breakfast to my mother who plans to visit this summer. I have also gotten some decorating ideas for the home we will be buying soon. Thank you again.”
