Why it’s called the Peerless Room

Peerless

Each Carriage House room is named after a racehorse owned by the Bonners, who owned Hampton Terrace at the turn of the century. They were the most famous owners of racehorses in the country at that time.

Peerless was the name of one of Mr. Bonner’s award-winning racehorses.

A man of unimpeachable character, the strict Scotch-Presbyterian did not smoke, drink or swear. Moreover, he was so violently opposed to gambling that he refused to enter his horses in public races. Consequently, Bonner brought a dignity to the sport that other wealthy nouveau, such as the salty Vanderbilt, never could.

The dam of Dexter was by American Star, as were a good many fast trotters, the best of which was Peerless, a gray mare, foaled in 1853. Hiram Woodruff, the best trainer of his day, said she was the fastest animal that he or any other man ever drove to a wagon, and that he drove her a quarter in 30s and a mile in 2:23.
