Our Celebrity Bartender & Guest
Our featured recipe, a tonic with gin, is a reimagined classic from Brian Van Flandern‘s 68-recipe book featuring creative drinks from top mixologists from around the world. Brian and his wife Kelly first stayed at the Inn for their honeymoon and have since hosted a free cocktail night at our heirloom bar, as well as a local mixology class organized and sponsored by Hampton Terrace Inn. Being asked by Thomas Keller to create the bar menu for Per Se, one of the highest-rated restaurants in the world is impressive in and of itself; but Brian will tell you his reimagining of the classic Gin & Tonic cocktail is one of the recipes that catapulted him to international attention, earning his title “America’s Top Mixologist” by the Food Network. He has appeared on many shows, including Bar Rescue and The Barefoot Contessa. For more information on Brian’s honors and influence, check out mymixologist.com. Then mix and enjoy his creation!

A Brief History of the Gin & Tonic
During the British occupation of India and parts of North Africa, soldiers had to ingest quinine powder to prevent malaria. They would stir the bitter red powder with soda siphon water and granulated sugar to make a medicinal beverage called a “tonic.” The soldiers decided that if they were forced to drink this medicine, they were going to add some gin. The gin & tonic recipe below closely resembles the original gin and tonic, with one notable addition: ice.
